Wherever you go, there you are.
I’m stuck in a snowstorm in Bozeman and I can’t help but wonder what the hell I’m doing here. Why would I come back here in the middle of winter? I’ve never experienced a real winter in my adult life. I don’t know what it’s like to drive on snow and ice. In a Prius from Florida, unequipped for a Montana winter. My car says Florida, my license says Florida, all of my official paperwork says Florida but I am so far from physical Florida and everything it represented. It’s been snowing pretty heavily the last couple of days, and the […]
“What’s your real job?” and other favorites I’ve heard as a nomadic musician
As a nomadic, single, mid-twenties, female musician who quit her nine-to-five job and mostly lives out of her car, I get a lot of interesting questions and comments. These are a few I’ve kept track of: “I hope you find a boyfriend.” Thanks. I’ve been wandering around the whole country looking for one. Do you have a grandson? “When are you going to pull the plug on all of this and decide what you’re doing with your future?” Hmm, good question. This past year and a half of being nomadic has really all just been a silly whim that I need […]

My New Website (Coming Soon!): A Lesson in Recovering From Perfectionism
It’s time to take things to the next level. I’m thrilled to be working on a new and improved website with Cultivar Designs! Cultivar is the brainchild of my dear friends from Sarasota, Shayna and Chris, and I can’t wait to show off their amazing work. In other news, through the process of upgrading my website, I’ve noticed how terribly loud these three words have become in my head: “NOT GOOD ENOUGH.” After my seasonal gig in Yellowstone ends in September, my goal is to go on tour and make music my full-time (or as-much-time-as-possible) work. I waited to start contacting venues […]
Being Big, Being Free: The Story Behind My Album Cover
I used to hate my nose. I thought it was too big. I would make sure I was always facing someone straight on rather than allowing them to look at my profile. I would stare at it in the mirror trying to convince myself it wasn’t so bad. And my hair. My hair was too big, too. I straightened it almost every day in middle school and high school. I learned to believe that big, curly, frizzy hair attracted too much attention, and not in a good way (although apparently things were different in the 80s)… And my body. I […]
Starving Artist? Let’s Change That Narrative.
Last summer I was working at the restaurant at the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park. I was chatting with one of my tables and told them I was a musician. In response, they said, “Oh, well you’re not going to make any money doing that.” Another table once told me, unsolicited, “You should really find a job after the season ends.” What?? These were people I didn’t even know. Why were they so concerned? Were they projecting their own fears and beliefs onto me about what it means to be an artist or taking risks to follow your […]
